Your Service Rights and Obligations

Length of Service


You are obliged to serve for a minimum period of three years and two months from the date of your enlistment.  Only you (by volunteering) or the Governor (by executive order) may extend your term of service.  (See Extending Your Service).


Service in Bermuda

Bermuda Law only requires that Regiment soldiers serve on operations in Bermuda.  You may volunteer for overseas operations, but you cannot be ordered to go as part of your military service.  If you do wish to serve overseas, you will first need to complete your basic Recruit training year and should consider advancing in rank to become a JNCO, which is done by attending the JNCO Cadre training program.  There are a number of training courses and camps that take place overseas - these are separate and apart from operational duty.  For clarification, speak with your Company Commander.

You may be sent overseas to take part in training exercises.  (See above, and also Special Training Opportunities)

Drills to be Served

You must do one fifteen-day training camp per year.  Certain members of the Regiment (staff or commanders) may have the opportunity to do more than one training camp in a calendar year, but only one camp is required.  You must do all drills as laid out in each Company training program, as ordered by the Commanding Officer.


The Regiment, in whole or in part, may be called up for full-time service, at any time, by the Governor, if circumstances are deemed to require all or part of the Regiment in an operational capacity.  Examples of this in recent years include the 9/11 Terrorism Attacks on the US, Hurricanes Fabian, Fay and Gonzalo etc.  (Also see History of the Regiment.)  Any time spent on Regimental duties during an embodiment is in addition to scheduled Camp Drill time. 

Exemption Tribunal

The Exemption Tribunal can provide “deferment” (postponement) of service or “exemption” (cancellation) of service on application.  For details or clarification on this process, speak with your Company Commander.


Your employer must release you for all Regimental duties.  Employers may not reduce your vacation time because of your Regimental duties.  The Defence Act provides protection for employees who are part of the Regiment, so that they are not disadvantaged at work by performing their military duties.


You are paid for time served, be it a drill night, annual camp or embodiment.  Embodiments and camps are paid for in advance or at the end of each week and your regular drills are paid three times a year:  March, June and December.  You are also eligible for certain performance bonuses payable annually.  (SeePay and Performance Bonuses).
