Regiment Open House Saturday

Residents are invited to sample a taste of military life this Saturday when the Royal Bermuda Regiment hosts an Open House at Warwick Camp.

Potential recruits, family and friends of serving soldiers and the wider community are all encouraged to attend the event, which will include demonstrations of weapons exercises and drill displays.

Major Duncan Simons, Officer Commanding, B Company, is organising the open day to support efforts to increase Regiment numbers and showcase the RBR’s operations.

He said: “Saturday is an opportunity for the community to come check us out, for soldiers to bring their friends and family, and for former soldiers to come back and see how much their Regiment has changed over the years.

“As a 100% volunteer unit we are dependant on people choosing to serve, and it is really important that folks have the opportunity to see what we are about, see what we offer, and ask lots of questions so that they can make informed decisions.

“I think that everyone can find a role that is a good fit for them – from Coast Guard divers, to hurricane relief teams, public order and internal security specialists, and our celebrated marching band as well as medics, chefs, mechanics and other support staff in our logistics unit, we have positions that cover a range of interests.

“Our best advocates are our members so we invite everyone to join us on Saturday so that they may see and hear for themselves just what it is that makes the Regiment enriching, fun and rewarding.”

The event, from 1pm to 4pm, will allow guests to tour the camp, visit a barrack room and hear about the two-week foundational training that soldiers undertake.

Attendees can see examples of the work carried out by the RBR’s immediate response teams, which use chainsaws and shore up buildings when they jump into action in the wake of a hurricane.

A presentation about the commissioning course – where soldiers take on advanced training overseas to become officers – will be delivered and the RBR’s Band and Corps of Drums will perform.

Members of the Coast Guard unit will be available to provide information about their work and the various qualifications that crews can earn, while aspects of living in the field and the Regiment’s motor transport unit will be among the other display stands.

Activities for children will be on offer and the Royal Bermuda Regiment Association – a network for former and serving soldiers – will also be represented.
